a "Tough Guy"

Over 5,000 people arrive in Staffodshire on Monday to compete in a Tough Guy competition: 8 miles of fire, water, ice, more fire, barbed wire…..you name it. Men and women, many of whom represented the military and police forces, took part in the grueling competition. And, not so surprisingly, many people chose to wear costumes. Bones were broken, blood was shed, but at the end of the day, everyone seemed to have a rousing good time and retired to the pub for a pint.

I want to do the same thing here in Brooklyn. Fire, water, tourist wrestling on the Bridge, walking down a Soho sidewalk on Saturday afternoon……. Who’s in?

big-wave_surfing_01It’s raining here in DUMBO today. My pants are soaked below the knee because the wind was so rough. And, boy, am I pissed…….

So naturally it caught my interest when I was told that there are storms off Hawaii that are causing 40 to 50 foot waves on the North Shore (not a misprint). My gosh, if its that bad, everyone must be running to the high ground with all their bags and pets and cutlery…….right?……

Wrong. Seems that these are the perfect (and only) conditions for the Eddie Aikau surf competition. Named after a famed surfer who died in the late ’70’s, the contest is ONLY held when the waves reach a certain size. So check out this video……the little specks on the tops of waves? Those are the surfers…..
